[Public-List] opening ports

Brian;
    Since you are ocean sailing, do remember that there is a safety
consideration with ports and added hatches. The Alberg 30 design has
considered and maintained a safety factor for (big) waves breaking over
the boat with no ports on the front of the coach-house and small ports
to reduce the area for water pressure to blow into the cabin. The solar
vent may be a reasonable compromise.
    I think it is always necessary when one wants to modify a proven
design to consider what might be compromised and that may take some
imagination to think of what the boat might endure in the worst case
situation. Consider also that weather patterns appear to be both more
variable (less predictable and with wider limits) and with greater
frequency for fury than when the first AL30 came out of the the moulds.
