Fair enough to the below, though in my case I have seen a marked improvement in the condition of the hull surrounding the fittings (a reduction in the degredation at least) which I attribute to the anode. I had not heard of fields damaging glass boats in this way until I came upon it in my boat, but local shipwrights have claimed that it's not an uncommon problem. I wonder whether there is a local effect due to currents in the water? At any rate it's a solution which has worked for me but is obviously not appropriate in all cases.
