[Public-List] Mast Beam support

Jonathan,

There's a link on the website to a shop up in baltimore that has the pattern
for the beam reinforcement. I had them made a couple years ago and they cost
me about $500 I think. Maybe $750. They cut them on a waterjet machine. You
have to drill your own holes. There is a link on the www.alberg30.org site
somewhere that has the contact info for the shop in Baltimore.

The templates I have are for icebox cabinetry. I can give you those if you
want them (although Tim has them right now). That's totally unrelated to the
mast beam.

The mast beam reinforcement is a much bigger job than I had anticipated.
Mike L and Phil B helped me do mine which was huge. Really huge. I owe them
big time. That was last year we did that I think. My beam had been sistered
on one side only and when we took that plate off it was like swiss cheese
under there. Not pretty at all. Mike in particular was a total saint in
helping me out with that job. It was a mess. I can take some pix of the
finished product and send them to you. It's quite nice.

Actually, after we got about 2/3 of the way through and realized that we
needed some knees on the bulkhead to hold things square, I came up with a
random block of teak which was laying around in my boat (I have a lot of
random hunks of wood) and Mike looked at me like I was from Mars and was
like "Why in the h**L didn't you TELL me you had that laying around?" I said
(sheepishly) that I had forgotten. It was funny.

Another funny episode was at one point Mike dropped one of the aluminum
plates in the water and I immediately stripped down and went diving to find
it in the mud. Good times. Only afterwards did they tell me that they had
recently had a waste water overflow into their creek. Oops. I guess I have a
strong immune system cuz I didn't come down with any hepatitis or e coli.
