I graduated from a university that had several varsity rowing teams and I
used to watch them training as I walked to class (I must say I saw no point
in getting up before dawn and being yelled at for 2 hours). I think that
the problem with your method is that you had a fixed seat whereas rowing
shell seats are set on sliders. This allows the rower to use his legs for
additional thrust. Next summer I will try your rowing technique on our old
Alberg using the companionway hatch as a seat. I think I can find a pair of
dory sweeps that are long enough.
