[Public-List] sculling

Let's see - an average adult can produce 100 watts continuously - so
your crew of 8 is 800 watts. At 746 watts/HP thats just about 1
horsepower.
But you have Olympic cyclers, so they can do about 400 watts each or 4
hp! Now you can do a good 3.5 - 4 knots!

Good thinking Rod,

Imagine if you got rid of the rig, there would be nothing stopping the
fitting of six or eight bicycle style saddle and peddle outfits all
chained into a gear box which might deliver power to the shaft.

With the backstay gone, one could fit a sport fishing style 'fighting
chair'
but in this case facing forward... Imagine tooling to windward with a
women's olympic cycling team peddling away while the skipper reclines in
the chair, observing, quaffing a cool beverage and accepting the salutes
of all who pass...

mmmmm
