One more thing for future
replacement of cutlass bearing do not cut off the excess bearing let it be
so later on you can drill a hole through the exposed part and use that to
pull out the bearing. - Agree doesn't have to be much but some bit
protruding may be a help

Gord been there done it. I did the same when I wanted to replace the
cutlass bearing. After removing the tube and cleaning it out I had a very
dificult time re caulking in the tube WITH the engine and gas tank out.
The biggest dificulty I had was the underside of the stern tube getting a
tight seal and aligning it to the engine. I solved this by installing the
engine with the prop shaft attached and aligning the stern tube with
stuffing box so the casting was centred to the stern hole and the casting
bolt holes. When this was ok I sealed the outside portion then removed
the engine and sealed the inside portion.
Good luck
