Hi Jeff,
 
It's not more work than installing alu. plates I belive and it's probably cheaper.  It took me maybe tree hours to remove it and clean all the boards whit a belt sander and about another two to three hours to but it back in place whit epoxy resin (+ cotton).  Just use a car jack to hold it up there and some c claps to hold it tight to the bulkhead while the epoxy cures.(overnight)
 
The glue they were using back then made the job for 35 years before failing, so imagine laminated whit epoxy resin ! You will never touch it again.
