Having built a number of wooden boats, including a 19' cat boat, I would
like to make some observations about wood laminations as it might impact the
ongoing discussion about replacing mast beams. In general, a laminated beam is
stronger than a solid wood one. In days of yore, the frames of many wooden
boats were steam bent from solid oak. But the trend today is to make laminated
beans. They are stronger and less apt to break. The wooden mine sweepers still
made in Wisconsin use giant laminated ribs. With this in mind I turn my
attention to A30 mast beams. A well crafted laminated beam should last for 20-30
years. The secret is the kind of wood you use more than the epoxy. Oak is
tricky because it doesn't always mate well with epoxy (T-88 seems to work as
well as any). On my cat boat the stem is three pieces of oak through bolted and
epoxied. It needed a little rejuvenation after 13 years. I would recommend
1/4" strips of a mixture of hickory or ash with mahogany. My cat boat tiller is
a compound curve of those materials and after 15 years is as solid as a
rock.
