[Public-List] 18 horsepower

Here's a data point- Coming back from Baltimore directly into 20 knots
and 2 1/2 foot seas,
my old atomic 4 gave me 4.5 knots through the water (5.5 over ground).
It will give me 6.5 in calm water when its working.

I have the Yanmar 13hp (2GM), and it pushes the boat along well.

There have been times when I have wanted more, but the Chesapeake does
not have strong currents, and so there are few occasions where the wind
and the current are conspiring against you. If you have the 18, that
should be more than enough.

Good luck with a surveyor. I think you need one to get insured, but ...
the guy that did my boat missed some key things. I would have been
better off to find someone on the list and buy them a beer for their
opinion - where are you located? (I am not looking to have a beer). If
you and the boat are in the Annapolis area for example, there are
probably a few folks on the list that would have a look with you.

Just my humble opinion - there were some things on my boat that were
missed, that I saw, and let them pass because I assumed the surveyor
knew what he was doing ... that won't happen again.

Many thanks to the many kind folks who responded to my questions about
companionway stairs and the original factory table. The list is truly a
treasure.

Now I am beginning to be concerned about more substantive things. The
boat has an 18 hp, 2 cylinder, Yanmar. I am wondering if anyone has
similar power in their boats. 18 horsepower seems like quite a
difference from a 30 horse Atomic Four. I'm sure that the Yanmar would
power to hull speed, but am wondering if there is much in reserve for
strong headwinds and or steep seas on the nose. Would appreciate some
wisdom of the BTDT type.

Also was wondering if anyone could recommend a surveyor, with Alberg 30
experience, in the Annapolis area?

Thanks, Larry
