[Public-List] Auto compass and tillers

I've been unable to calibrate the auto compass on my new TP22 TillerPilot. Is there anyone with an A30 that has experience with this that can give me some advice? With a starboard mounting of the unit, and going in the prescribed clockwise circles, I can't get the starboard and port tack lights to stop blinking long enough to achieve calibration. Within three feet of the unit, I've got a locker's exterior lock, tiller head fitting, the engine's control lever and interior linkage; this doesn't seem like it would be enough metal to prevent calibration.

Also, I'm planning on replacing my tiller. The current tiller is a "drop" model that works well enough except that to get a full sweep I need to raise it in order to clear the cockpit lockers. Raising the tiller seems to unduly stress the tiller head fitting (this fitting appears to be original). I'm considering a "rise" model that would clear the lockers without raising it. The IdaSailor people tell me that most Alberg folks still order the drop model as a replacement. Am I missing something here? Thanks,
Chuck
