[Public-List] Auto compass and tillers

Hi All,

Does anyone have pictures of either the drop or rise tiller?
What did the Alberg 30 originally have as a tiller? Drop or so call rise
type?

Where would I order the drop one from?

Thanks,

-bob

I purchased a tiller from Ida some years ago and have no trouble with it
hitting the lockers. I had them make mine a lttle longer than the original.
that was a good idea, I think. My recollection is that some of us have
replaced the original tiller with a catalina 27 tiller and liked the results
very much. I am curious, what is a "drop" tiller? My guess is that the
catalina tiller is a "rise" tiller: it bends upward a short distance after
the tiller head.

Try circling slower [ or make a larger circle ] . That did it for me.

I've been unable to calibrate the auto compass on my new TP22 TillerPilot.
Is there anyone with an A30 that has experience with this that can give me
some advice? With a starboard mounting of the unit, and going in the
prescribed clockwise circles, I can't get the starboard and port tack lights
to stop blinking long enough to achieve calibration. Within three feet of
the unit, I've got a locker's exterior lock, tiller head fitting, the
engine's control lever and interior linkage; this doesn't seem like it would
be enough metal to prevent calibration.

Also, I'm planning on replacing my tiller. The current tiller is a "drop"
model that works well enough except that to get a full sweep I need to raise
it in order to clear the cockpit lockers. Raising the tiller seems to unduly
stress the tiller head fitting (this fitting appears to be original). I'm
considering a "rise" model that would clear the lockers without raising it.
The IdaSailor people tell me that most Alberg folks still order the drop
model as a replacement. Am I missing something here? Thanks,
  Chuck
