Plants do not like salt any more than animals do if they are not used to 
it. There is basically no difference in the physiology of life between 
plants and animals that have evolved to accomodate their current 
conditions. They are trying to get salt tolerance for plants using  
genetic engineering but that has been a long slow process and not very 
efficient even now. However, changing salinity will not take the residue 
which will be only the non water components of the plant off the hull 
and so even with the proposed changes of salinity, it will still be a 
rough bottom on the boat.
