  Glenn,

Interesting!  I'm almost sure 1968 would be a first-generation boat.  I 
think the non-liner boats went up into the transitional era, of which I 
know #399 is one  (for comparison, my #221 is early 1967). While I 
wouldn't expect anything more than that "outside" layer with some 
filler on the inside to make it smooth, it does certainly sound a bit 
curious at the edge there.   I wonder if what you're seeing is where 
the cored deck starts to attach (?)  Supposing the mold would have been 
for the cabintop, cabinsides, and *top* layer of deck; well, then there 
would have to be a stepped transition somewhere where the lower deck 
(under the core) joins in to the main molded part.   I'd love to see a 
photo of that.  One would like to see some glass reinforcing that 
area...

I also wonder if your boat overhead had been ground down before?  Was 
the woven roving there before you sanded?  On mine it all looks very 
smooth, as if it had been plastered, and that's how other 1st gen A-30s 
I looked at were too (when I was boat shopping).  Of course there has 
to be rougher fiberglass underneath that, but it sounded like that's 
what you had right away. I'll have to take a close look up in the 
anchor locker since it may not be as thoroughly finished up in there.

I would attach a photo of the overhead in my boat, but I don't think 
they can go through on this list.
