Ted,
No matter what you do this will be a messy & possibly
harmful process. There are no easy ways of doing this besides writing a
check.
If you are going to get hands on about this then , having
seen others suffer through the chemical removal hell ... I suggest 24 grit
floor sand paper, a RO Dustless sander and time. This will be the fastest
and easiest way to get the paint of 30+ years off. I also suggest a good
respirator and face shield. Overalls ... and gloves. The vacuum will pull
a good bit of the debris but it gets everywhere anyway.
If you go
the chemical / stripper route & start today you will not be finished
till mid july. You also will find this as the messiest and highly
dangerous route to go down.
I have been there ... good luck &
keep asking questions !
