John,
I too am in the process of replacing the gate valves with sea cocks. Since I didn't care what happened to the gate valves, I used an 18" pipe wrench an a long steady pull to free the gate valve . Remember that the threads of the thru hull are straight thread?and the threads of the gate are tapered. The gate will give up in this struggle.
On the 1/2" thru hull for raw water to the engine, I threaded the inside of a used 3/4" thru hull (bronze)?with a 1/2" x 14 tap and cut off a 1" 'reducer' that threads onto the existing 1/2" thru hull and into the 3/4" sea cock which I bolted to a 'shim' and attached to the existing backing block. In all cases, I was able to preserve the existing thru hull fittings and upgrade to sea cocks.
Pics available on request.
Fair winds,
Randy

I am finally getting around to replacing the original gate-valves on my boat Sam. The 1 and 1/4 inch sink drain valve is frozen solid on the through hull fitting. Has anyone any suggestions on how to get this gate-valve off without doing too much damage. I have a similar problem with the i/2 inch engine water intake, which I propose to replace with a 3/4 seacock.?
