Arrrr Jim, ye be right it should be a cutlass!  At work we sometimes use "Bear Bangers" to drive off troublesome Black Bears.  They are fired from a 12 ga. shotgun and send a delayed action explosive package out about 100 feet or so.  The trick is to put the package between you and the bear rather than beyond it.  I wonder if they will fit into our flare pistol?
