[Public-List] Cockpit drain through hull size

Mick,

I am replacing my cockpit drains (w/ 1-1/2"), engine exhaust, and bilge pump
thru hulls and I plan to use "O" rings between the outside of the holes in
the hull and the inside of the flange. (Please, anyone pipe in if this is a
stupid idea.) Since the holes are slightly bigger than the OD of the flange
shafts, the rings should seat well in the gaps. Plus they will hold the
flanges slightly off the surface of the hull, which should allow for the
slight curvature of the hull and allow for some thickness to the sealant (I
have always been told sealants won't work if they are too thin - no chance
to flex, too easy to crack).

I found out trick is to get the correct diameter O ring. I started w/ 1/16"
and they were too small, then got 1/4" and they healed the flanges too far
from the hull. Guess I should order the variety pack. I bought the
Forespar Marlon (sp?) plastic sea cocks for the cockpit drains. The base is
too large and bumps into the fore/aft bulkhead to the cockpit locker so I
ground down the "ears" that stick out for the mounting holes and drilled new
holes inboard of the original (ain't nothing easy in boat renovation).

The flanges from my cockpit drains are smaller than 1-1/2" so I bought new
Peko drains but they have a "V" shaped cross section at the edge of the
flange and I don't have the faintest idea how to cut new holes w/ tapered
sides so, for now, I plan to wrap FG around the existing flanges to make
them wide enough to accept 1-1/2" hose (not the "final" solution, but so
many other things to do; can't get hung up customizing every solution).

I can let you know when I find the elusive O ring size.

Subject: [Public-List] Cockpit drain through hull size

Hi Alberg Listers,

I am in the process of fitting new through hulls and seacocks.  I have
ordered 1 1/2" through hulls for the cockpit drains however looking closely
at the curve of the hull in that area I am not sure the thru-hulls will seat
properly.  Has anyone successfully fitted this size thru-hull.

thanks

Mick
