Curious-Do you intend to attach the other end somewhere around the 
spreader crosstrees? Some kind of running backstay?

To me, having the inner and fore stay parallel would be important 
appearance wise, though probably performance too. The beauty of the 
Alberg is one of her bigger features, I have been looking at mine on 
jack stands for way too long now, but every time I walk up to her, I 
never fail to be impressed by her symmetry.

Anyway, I presume you are rigging for extreme conditions (the storm sail 
reference). I would be hesitant to engineer those kind of potential 
shock loads on an unsupported mast section-even the Albergs' telephone 
pole of a mast.
