Another idea is using a much longer screw of the same diameter and
thread to clear the hole and get you started. At least you will be able
to hold onto this one.

Ya, I tried loosening the other screws, and I was careful to note the
orientation of the plate. I think my problem is the gasket blocking
enough
of the threads to keep the screws from biting. I will remove the plugs
when
I try again.
Oh how I wish there were a better way to deal with the impellor!
