[Public-List] Wire reel winch - information needed

I have 3 wire reel winches on Mahseer. Each one is different on how the
wire is attached, the one I use for my main outhaul has two grub screws
visable on top of the winch, the second one used for my main halyard has
the screws below the top plate. This is accessed by removing the circular
spring in the centre and removing the plate. The locking mechanism is a
clamp arround the base of the winch, do not oil or grease this part or it
will slip. The third winch that I use for my headsail furling has the
screws accesable from the top. I have had these since I bought the boat
and do not intend to replace them. they make the cockpit tidy with no
lines to store when used. As to the safty of these my winches have not
slipped nor do I keep a winch handle in the top unless I intend to use it.
When reefing I keep my hand on the winch at all times thus eliminating
any chance of a runaway handle.
The arguments put forward about broken arms etc is like saying you
should not have a gas engine or propane on board because it might
explode, yes this could happen if you do not follow basic safety
precausions.
