Thanks Ed,

It was some sort of whitish, not 5200 product. (Wish I could say that
for the rest of the boat.  A previous owner 5200'ed the turtle thinking
perhaps that heavy seas would rip the dozen screws from the deck. 
Yikes!)

I'll protect the bolts with lanolin or something similar.

On Emotional Rescue #303, we don't put anything on. At the Yard's that
we have used in Chicago. they don't put anything on. Perhaps it was
lanolin to protect/coat the bolts?

Ahoy,

I'm ready to step the mast on Tiana. It appears that the previous
mast-stepper applied some sort of goop atop the mast step plate. I've
scraped it and dug out the four bolt holes for the mast base so they
screw in easily.

What, if anything, should be applied to the plate before stepping the
mast?
