Ted,

I have done this job twice on different boats. I managed to do this work in 10 hours. The stuffing tube is a bronze pipe that is threaded on the cutalss bearing end. The original install was to insert the tube through the hull and caulk it with Dofonite (SP?) that gray colored caulking you will find in other areas of the boat, especially on the windows. So, step 1 is to remove the cutlass bearing housing (Important: once the 2 bolts are remove it screws off). Remove the shaft. Remove the stuffing box. Then remove the tube. Clean everything up very well. Dry fit everything. Mark the shaft with a magic marker where it exits the tube inside the boat. Here is my secret tip...wrap the shaft with several wraps of tape to take up the difference between the OD of the shaft and the ID of the tube behind the mark you made on the shaft. This will keep the shaft centered in the tube on the front end, the cutlass bearing will keep it centered on the aft end. Install the shaft. Screw the cutlass bearing housing onto the tube (I would definintely install a new cutlass bearing). Slide the cutlass bearing housing/tube over the shaft until it is all the way in (make sure to wipe the outside of the tube with acetone before installing to remove all oils and finger prints). Fill every void inside completely with 3M 5200 and let cure for a week (5200 is better than glass because it has a little give and will flex, where glass might crack). Once the 5200 has cured, remove the shaft to remove the tape. Remove the cutlass bearing housing and fill and voids between the tube and the hull from behind with 5200. Allow to cure. Re-install shaft and cutlass bearing housing, lauch boat, go sailing have a beer. It will never leak again.
