[Public-List] RE Sail Track Fastening

Mick,

let me throw this monkey wrench into the discussion. Sliding goose
necks are completely old school and have many disadvantages to the
fixed gooseneck. If I were going to all the trouble you are
discussing I would invest in a modern fixed gooseneck fitting.

I have one on my boat. It is fixed to the mast with 6 -5/16" bolts
threaded into the mast. It has two reef hooks for slab reefing. It
is constructed out of stainless steel. Very robust. It never crosses
my mind that this fitting might fail.

The advantages:
The boom is in a fixed location on the mast and you no longer have to
lift the boom while raising the main. Less strain on the halyard and
the hoister.
Convenient reefing. Adding to safety of the crew.
Super strong.

Disadvantages:
Not original equipment.

Check out rigrite.com/spars/sparparts/gooseneck for a good supply of
options.

My two cents,
