Sound to me like Jonathan has had a lot of practice tying up to
Pussers!!

I like and follow Mike Mienhold's suggestions. However, I have some
other thoughts...
I only try and back the boat when I want it to go the way the prop walks
(which is to port on my boat). This is very impressive if you come
flying into a slip turn the boat aggressively into a turn to get the
back end facing where you want it, and then put it in reverse. If you
were turning to port, this will stop the turn, and pull the boat
backwards in a vaguely straight path. If you are turning to starboard,
this pulls the boat into an even tighter turn, and has the effect of
sliding the boat sideways.
For those in the Annapolis area, this is useful when visiting Pusser bar
on ego alley. There is always a space right behind the two Windward
schooners that is just over 30 feet. If you plan on going port side to,
head for the dock, jam the tiller hard over as late as possible, and
throw her in astern. The boat slides nicely along side. The daughter of
the owners of the Windward schooners is an excitable lady, and I have
managed to get her a little worked up - which just adds to the
excitement of this particular maneuver.
Boat came out of the water today boo hoo
