I've had mine all apart-I can't remember how the check 
valve works exactly, but the 'leather' attached to the end 
of the push rod (mine has been jury rigged previously with 
what looks like inner tube and a couple of washers) can be 
temporarily improved with some vaseline. Top and bottom 
fittings are screw threaded to the brass cylinder.
