Jeff,

The only comment I would make regarding Gords solution is to ensure  
that your stanchion bases are anchored to the deck with good fasteners  
and a full backing plate.

The standard mounting for a Stanchion base is 1/4-20 bolts with  
realtively small pan washers.  this is not adequate support to take  
the sheet load.
