When I mounted one on my A30 I put it just above the spreaders.  The weight was not a concern nor did it affect the boat.  As has already been said, unless you intend to sail at extreme angles of heel - no problem, the beam is wide enough.  The added height helps reduce sea clutter, but does not significantly increase the effective range.  I real world terms, inshore 3 to 6 miles, offshore about six miles.  For spotting thunderstorms, out to max range of the radar.
