Jeff,

I am doing the same job right now.  Your measurements are the same as mine-  there is very little clearance.  There are some good suggestions in the archives as to how to keep the log centred around the shaft when you put it back on and sealing.

I missed a Golden opportunity to overcome the problem as I had to have a new log made.  It was made from solid aluminum bronze which was machined.  I missed the chance to leave one end with a bigger OD.  Rats.

I would be interested to know how you go building up one end.  I ordered some hose and I didn't like what I was sent.  The idea of using proper stuffing box hose is very appealing by comparison.

I will be working on the log over the next couple of days.  Perhaps we could swap notes at some point.
