A hoop knife (what the art store lady called it) consists of a metal strip, about 6" long, 1/4" wide, 1/16" thick, with one edge tapered to a cutting edge. The strip is bent into a loop and the ends are fixed in the end of a wooden handle. When sideways pressure is applied to the sharpened edge it will slice through semi-soft material. They are designed for clay sculpting, but did an ok job of removing the large mass of sealnt around the stern tube.
