[Public-List] Cockpit deck core job

CB:
I had a discussion with Gougeon's when I redid my deck about core
materials and they suggested balsa core as still the best because of the
use a deck or cockpit sole gets and the characteristics of the core
materials. Gougeon's have a service where one can telephone their shop
personnel to discuss uses and applications of their products, so I used it.
Because an owner can never determine the gracefulness of those
aboard and the possibilities that someone may leap from a pier down onto
a deck, or drop something big and hard onto a deck, there is always the
possibility of extra and shock loading on a small area on a deck. If
this load is such that it compresses the core, there is no possibility
of any rebound from any other core than wood. Wood is the only material
with enough elasticity to at least attempt to come back to its original
shape. While there may be more core materials now than 12 years ago,
wood still has the ability to return to its original form.
It is an owner's choice as to the material he chooses but there are
very reasonable reasons to choose wood.
