Roger,
I would be concerned with how you plan to deal with/seal the 1/8" edge of the Oakum? Solid wood edging? Metal trim? Saturate with Epoxy? Have you considered a thinner veneer? Something like 1/32". My thoughts would be less expansion/contraction of the applied material to sheer the contact adhesive. With the solid original laminate backing support .....strength would not be needed for the newly applied material, thus a thinner veneer would achieve the effect you desire. Believe me #133 has that plastic laminate on her bulkheads and while it maybe practical and easy to maintain...... it is butt ugly.

Subject: [Public-List] contact cement for new bulkhead laminate
I have a plan to use contact cement (the stuff they use to adhere plastic
laminate to kitchen counters) to fasten 1/8", 3 ply Oakum plywood to the
areas below on good old 148 that are now wood grain plastic laminate
(bulkheads, sides of bunks and galley. etc.). I refastened any delaminated
areas w/ epoxy and sanded the existing laminate.
Does the contact cement seem like a good way to attach the new paneling?
Does anyone know of problems doing this in a marine environment?
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated?
Thanks,
Roger 148
