It's not the line that jams.  It's the top hank.  Tying the downhaul to 
the head grommet gives enough leverage to twist the hank sideways so it 
binds on the forestay.

I think I'm using a 3/16" line, but it could be 1/4".  It's whatever I 
had in the locker.
