[Public-List] Tack Hooks

Mine are also on the boom and double as the place I secure the lazy
jacks.
It seems to me that the hooks place the tack just about where it should
be to line up with the foot and the luff.

My hooks are on either side of the boom (not the mast), and I have the
strop that rachel refers to.
I would say that the advantage of having it on teh boom rather than the
mast is that the stress is equal regardless of where the boom is.
Having hooks on both sides just means that you do not have to reach
around the mast if you happen to be reefing from the wrong side.
My clew lines lead forward to the forward end of the boom, so you drop
the main, and hook up the tack and tighten the clew all from the same
place.
This works well for me.

Hi Mick,
This is not direct A-30 experience, but may apply.
On the boat I cruised on (a friend's W-32), we had a tack hook
arrangement. I had previously seen people simple fit the tack grommet
(in the sail) right over the tack hook, but that made things a bit
difficult on the W-32. So we made a strop.
Essentially, it was some cordage (1/4" or maybe smaller) that went
through the tack grommet on the sail and had a rig on each end. It just
stayed there all the time. Then when you reefed you slipped the ring
over the tack hook. By varying the length of the cord you had some
leeway to make things fit together, and it was less of a struggle when
reefing, especially in sporty conditions.
I think we had maybe two parallel bits of cordage. So....
Ring---doubled.up.cordage---ring.
I hope that makes sense in words!

would like to fit tack hooks onto the vertical pin of the gooseneck
fitting. The effect of doing this is going to put the tack of the
mainsail very close to the mast. I am trying to picture what it is
going to be like having this arrangement.
