[Public-List] Alberg rig Weak Links

    We have had one rig failure recently in the Great Lakes  with a 
backstay failure. From the description I heard from the skipper, it 
sounded as if all the chainplate bolts sheared except the bottom one and 
so the chaimplate rotated and tore the deck until it was in line with 
the backstay. Then a shock load hit and the threads of both ends on the 
turnbuckle let go and the rig floated down tearing the mast base plate 
off since there was a bolt in it at the base of the mast. That one was 
$22,000 to get sailing again from Klaco, whom JB has mentioned. 
Replacing wire is cheap comparatively at less than 1/10 that cost.
