[Public-List] Loose footed mainsail question

"Emotional Rescue" #303 has just ordered a loose-footed mainsail. We asked for mainsail quotes from 7 sailmakers; all recommended a loose-footed sail as the new thinking. My question is; how have you run the outhaul? On #303, the existing outhaul cleat is about 12 inches forward of the boom end

So as to allow for foot ajustment while underway, I wonder how far forward to run the outhaul? Mid boom over the companionway? To the mast, down to deck, and back to cabintop at companionway? Will I need a 4:1 part purchase or 1:1 to allow a woman crew to adjust?

Thanks, Ed Schroeder

Yeh, I just got a quote from North sails, for a new main. They seem to recommend lose footed to obtain better shape, both on and off the wind.
Should work fine, but if you race your boat, likely won't fit with the one design rules.
Also am looking at a full batten main, but may shy away for the same reason, not that I'm likely to be racing.
Don't know where you are, but Lee Sails in Vancouver (and I'm sure elsewhere) quotes about $600.00 cheaper than North. Many sailors around here use Lee, and I don't hear any bad reports.
Input from all would be appreciated.

I am replacing my main and Genoa with some new tri-radial darcon cruising sails, and the guys at North Sails suggested a loose footed main to make it easier to remove whilst idleing along in the howling gales of the century outshore.
