You have ruled out a pole mounted aft? Optimal height is more related to 
staying out of microwave blast range than anything. I have a 96 mile 
radar I use at work and very rarely go to any longer range than 12 
miles-and that off shore. 3 mile or 6 mile is usual, and those ranges 
don't require any special altitude. I picture the scanner abusing, and 
being abused by, the Genoa and halyards mounted on the mast.
