Thanks for all the info.  Yes, we have the manual pump, and no, we won't depend on the auto.  It's just one more layer of protection.

The iron starts just slightly aft (inches) of the under-sole bulkhead that separates the aftermost under-saloon compartment from the engine bilge. So you may not be tapping into it anyway. (But I still prefer the L-bracket mounting so you can pull the pump up for service, etc. and then you have no fasteners down low). 
 
Not that maybe a liner boat does not have that particular bulkhead but the ballast should still end in the same place (i.e. just forward of the engine flywheel). 
 
I don't know how they changed bilge construction for liner boats, but in the earlier boats all the ones I've seen have a really poor seal between the bilge and the ballast pig anyway (as in.... it had completely failed).
