But when your angle of heel gets bigger, that stops being the case (for
the rudder, at least). I've had the questionable fortune to have been
steering the boat vertically down in the past (thank god they're buoyant
enough that I was no more effective in this direction than I was at
bearing off until I could get the main loose).
