[Public-List] Leading lines aft (gregr at nethere.com)

I just pulled my mast today and noticed all the original( aluminum) rivets ( since 1968) holding aluminum fittings are in great shape all over the mast, and noted all the SS bolts and screws are oxidized and continue to corrode into white dust. The rivets are fairly robust wall thickness, (maybe 3/16 dia), and no doubt of high grade metal. I cant see a reason not to use them so long as you make a tang of marine grade aluminium that distributes the load so the lines don't shear abruptly...

Schaeffer makes a cheek block and you can buy the separate Delrin spacer to get it to match the curve of the mast. Most of the hardware folks make a similar block

I used 10-24 bolts drilled and tapped into the mast. I have little experience with rivets, I would certainly no use aluminium ones. With the headsails there is a fair bit of strain on those blocks.

Jonathon,

Thanks for the picts! How did you mount the check blocks to the mast? We use
aluminum pop rivets on a lot of the hardware for the Victory 21s I race. I
don't think I would trust them on my Alberg. (I don't really trust them on
the Victory's...)
