If you are going to do any staining on bare wood, particularly on woods  
with wild grains, like pine, oak, cherry, teak use a jel stain. It is the  
consistency of Jello and goes on with a rag--no runs. Because it is a surface  
stain it doesn't blotch as when penetrating stains hit different densities 
of  wood. Minwax makes a dozen colors. They also make a wipe on poly. Again, 
goes on  with a rag, no runs. Recoat in four hours.
