[Public-List] White smoke

Hi Gord,
Worst case the atomic 4's are very simple to work on. If you rebuilt your
B's 1800 then an A-4 will be a straight forward project. They're only one
step above working on the lawnmower. In a worst case scenario you could hock
out the engine and rebuild it on you kitchen table over a week end provided
the bottom end is sound and you don't have to split the bottom end casing to
replace seals and get into crankcase alignment/ shims etc.
Peter

Thanks friends,
I am went over to the boat to check her lines, there is a blow forecast to
come through here tonight and I didn't want to worry about her.
I ran the engine and found that when the revs are high & the engine is in
neutral, I get the 'smoke'. When the normal operating revs (about 1200)
there is hardly any at all. I let it warm up.
I noticed that there seems to be an oily residue in the cooling water coming
out. Yes Peter, it is an open system and the engine is an Atomic IV. I
also noticed a faint black staining around the edge of the head gasket
seam...
Now if my problem is the head gasket, I can replace that without taking the
engine out of the boat. Worn rings, which I guess are to be expected in an
engine forty years old, would be more hellish to deal with. I tore my MG
engine down and put it back together a number of years ago. I know some
people like that sort of work but I was extremely relieved when it was over.
Maybe that's the pleasure?
Gord
