If you believe the problem to be the head gasket bypassing cooling water
then try retorting the head before you go to that trouble first.

I think so to Peter - and it looks to me that I can relatively easily to the
head gasket job with the engine in position.
The engine runs smooth as silk other than the white smoke issue. I'll order
a head gasket on Monday.
