What is the carb supposed to look like on the inside. It seemed like there
was a film and some black specks but I don't know what it is supposed to
look like. And yes, this is the first time it has been run this year.

Jock,
Two carburetors were used, a zinc die cast one and perhaps a cast iron one
(Zenith). On both there is a bolt on the bottom that allows you to separate
the two halves without having to remove the carb from the engine. The bottom
half is the bowl. The inside should appear dull grey in color. Clean out any
debris. If you have a water separator or sediment bulb installed remove the
bowl and clean that out as well.I would also check out the tank vent line
for mud daubers or other insect debris. When you replace the coil mount it
away from the heat of the engine or shield it from the heat of the engine.
This will significantly increase it's life and reliability. If you manually
prime the pump and carburetor a la George's suggestion you should be able to
start right away after your maintenance work.
