I have a snap on my halliard to clip on the head of my fore sail.  My down haul is tied to the ring of the snap at the beginning of the season then it is available for which ever head sail I have on that day without having to remember it.  Bonus  -  I can never lose the halliard to the top of the mast while changing sails on a lively fore deck.
