Hi Mike,

What did you use to fill the unwanted holes in your mast prior to painting?  Did this product hold up under the paint? Do you think that this product could be use on an unpainted mast and still look presentable? Thanks.

P.S. BTW for some time I thought that you were also a 505 dinghy sailor until I realized that 505 was your Alberg hull number!

Joseph,

I painted my mast and boom with Awlgrip about 25 years ago and it is still doing good. It was a long and tedious job with multiple steps. First lots of sanding (my boat #505 the mast and boom were anodized...not sure that was true for #115); Then there was a chemical wash; then there was an etching process; then there was a primer; and at last there was the final coat. The paint is finiky, and needed to be adjusted for temperature and humidity (that may have changed in the past 25 years). I started with a china bristle brush from the top of the mast and worked my way down...I figured that as I got closer to the base (and eye-level) my brushing technique would improve and I woul have fewer brush strokes. I did the boom after doing the mast. It was a good time to remove and re-bed all of the mast/boom hardware and fill holes that were no longer used. I painted mine a light gray to keep it cool in the summer months (cannot even imagine having a black mast on the Chesapeake).

Hope this helps.
