Update: It isn't metric, or at least it isn't
standard metric. I got out my thread gauges and measured.
It's 1/2" by 12 TPI. Standard 1/2" coarse thread
is 13 TPI.

Gordon: I'll try the painting thing. I have
leftover aluminum acid etching stuff from when I
did the water tank.

Richard: Whitworth Tread, eh? Sounds about right. There
should be at least one English car repair shop here
in Victoria.
