Gord,

I remember reading about the spring line thing in the Patrick O'Brian
series. What a "Surprise."

Hello again Roger -

I used to make TOUCH WOOD fast to her mooring stern to sometimes - purely
for the improved ventilation to dry things out below after a wet passage. I
never would have left her that way for long, nor would I have ever anchored
her that way while on a cruise.

Its funny this discussion has come up now. I am working on a documentary
involving warships during the Napoleonic Wars... One of the maneuvers
commonly used in coastal actions was to anchor a warship with a spring on
her cable. Imagine an anchor down forward as usual... But made fast to the
cable is a lighter spring line (made fast with a particular very cool knot)
that is led to the stern. When the spring is slack, the ship lies head to
wind or current as is normal. If the spring is hauled upon, the ship can be
swung through up to 180 degrees, allowing her broadside to aimed wherever
the Captain needs it to be applied.

I was just explaining all this to the production....
