Good info, thank you all.

One problem I have with the tripped threads is it's the lowest/inner thread. 
Even with the shortest tap I have its too tight to get a good hold, not to 
mention apply any pressure to get it started. I thought about filling the voids 
with epoxy, maybe I'll give it another go before pulling ou the Amex for a new 
one.

I know I'm getting into this late....

I think the Whale Gusher 10 is one of the best yacht bilges pumps around.
You can repair almost anything.  You can repair the stripped hole (I assume
a machine screw goes into it) you can clean it out with a drill bit, then
fill it with epoxy.  The epoxy will adhere very well to the cast aluminium
pump body.  Then re-drill the hole, tap threads, replace the machine screw
and enjoy a great pump for another forty years.
