[Public-List] the grey oily goo saga

well, here's the update...the 4th oil change did the trick & the goo is gone...wooohoo...and yes, i did remove  the water from the block as far as the drain plugs allowed...and running the motor up to a minute between oil changes with no water has given the water pump a bit of a squeal type noise which will be my next project...reading old posts from the Moyer site revealed my possible water contamination as Dan has said NEVER run a pressurized water hose to a running atomic 4 as the water pump/exhaust can not keep up with the flow & water will back flush it through the exhaust into the motor...so much to learn so little time...lol....hmmmmmm...guess what i did...mike

If you had bent it into a "S" turn under the box it would have acted like a trap and kept even more cold in.

It also would've been an absolute nightmare to install, since the space
under the box isn't terribly large or accessible for post-installation
bending (and it's copper tubing, so I'm not sure that the reduction in
losses due to airflow would outweigh the increased conductive losses by
all that much).

Hi William, Mike,

It did take me 6 oil changes after my boat filled with water, as the 
mechanic predicted. There was no leak from the cooling system, the water 
had entered through the so-called "oil fill" which I had accidentally 
left open. :-(

But you do raise an interesting and possibly very important point -- If 
the water is entering the oil system slowly through a crack or leak in 
the cooling circuit, it might be necessary to aggressively _drain the 
cooling system_ to keep water from continuing to be pumped into the oil, 
or maybe Mike has already done this. In that case, you may want to 
remove the impeller, and don't run run the engine more than 20 seconds 
or so at a time, and keep on pumpin'. If in doubt, I would strongly 
suggest a call to Don Moyer, this qualifies as a difficult situation, 
and he is very friendly and helpful.
