[Public-List] Insurance and Albergs

Hello David - congratulations on acquiring the boat.

I don't really have any relief to offer other than to say that the insurance
cost and survey rate seem about right to me.

It is normal for any insurance company to make a new survey a condition of
coverage - and they will require another survey every five years. On one
hand it is a pain to shell out the money; but on the other it really doesn't
hurt to have a professional do an impartial examination for you
periodically.

With regards to the survey - you would be well advised to find a person who
understands older boats. I have seen otherwise good boats hurt with regard
to insurance issues by an unsympathetic an ill-informed surveyor. There are
some things about a late '60's boat that should be considered 'normal' that
might be characterized as a problem in a new boat. (wiring standards is one
issue...) Ask around where you live for advice re who to go to. If there
are other classic plastic yachts there knock on their hull & ask who they
like. We've all been through this and I think you'll find advice and
recommendations (and warnings) are easy to garner.

Good luck -
